We had a running internal debate at Kreative Labs about motion graphics versus static design for property brands. Motion graphics take longer and cost more to produce. Static design is faster, cheaper and easier to iterate. The question was: does motion actually move the needle enough to justify the investment?
So we ran an experiment. Six client accounts. Three months. Alternating motion and static posts, controlled for timing, format and caption strategy. Here's what we found.
The results
Motion graphics outperformed static design across every metric we measured:
- Reach: +41% for motion vs. static on comparable posts
- Saves: +156% — this was the most decisive gap
- Profile visits from post: +88%
- Link clicks (where applicable): +34%
The saves metric was the one that changed our thinking most significantly. Instagram's algorithm weights saves heavily as a signal of content quality. Motion graphics that were saved at 10× the rate of static posts were being distributed to non-follower audiences at a dramatically higher rate.
"The save rate gap wasn't in the art direction. It was in the motion. People save things that feel like references — and motion content feels like something worth coming back to."
When static still wins
The data doesn't mean static design is dead. There are specific use cases where static outperforms motion:
- Time-sensitive announcements (open home reminders, auction results)
- Quote graphics and text-based thought leadership posts
- Behind-the-scenes photography with high visual interest
The smartest strategy uses motion as the primary format for brand content and static for informational and time-sensitive posts.
What good motion graphics look like for property brands
Not all motion is created equal. The motion graphics that drove the strongest results in our test shared these characteristics:
- Subtle, purposeful movement — not gratuitous animation
- Typography that enters with timing that creates visual rhythm
- Brand colour usage that respects the premium aesthetic
- Audio-off legibility — most Instagram is watched muted
If budget is a constraint, prioritise motion for your hero content (new listings, project launches, brand positioning) and use static for supporting posts. The 80/20 split between motion and static tends to deliver results closest to a full-motion strategy at a fraction of the cost.
